United Airlines Luggage Policy

CHECKED BAGS

For this trip we are each limited to one piece of checked luggage, one carry on and one "personal item".  The personal item is generally a purse or a briefcase, but the definition is left vague.

Get out your scale and tape measure!

Your checked bag cannot weigh more than 50 lbs.

The outside dimensions of the bag, which equal its height + width + depth, cannot exceed 62 inches.

You can read all the details of United's checked baggage policy here.

CARRY ON BAGS

Your one carry on must not exceed 14 inches x 9 inches x 22 inches.

Remember that there are additional restrictions imposed by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) for carry on luggage, including the limitation on liquid contents:

  • Customers departing from U.S. airports on any flight may bring carry-on bags through security and aboard the aircraft with trial-size toiletries (3.4 ounces or less) which can be purchased at any drug store.
  • Toiletries must fit comfortably in one, quart-size (7.5-inch x 8-inch), clear plastic zip-top bag.
  • The zip-top bag may need to be presented separately at airport security so make sure it is easily accessible when you approach the screening area.
You can purchase water or soda in the airport shops after clearing security and bring those items on the plane.

You can see the full list of TSA prohibited items on their web site here.

For those with particular needs, you can read about TSA regulations for travelers with medical conditions or disabilities here.
